Grandma Casper passed away this September. She had another fall, and was in a rehab
center, when her condition soon worsened. She stopped eating or drinking, and
we knew that she was taking a turn for the worst. Tyler and I had the chance to
spend some one on one time with her in her last days. We had just been checked
out at the hospital, due to my high blood pressure, and we stopped to see her
before heading back home. She was shaking very badly, but her eyes were opened.
She wasn’t speaking anymore at this point… tyler went to get his siblings on
the phone to facetime to be able to see grandma, so I kneeled down beside her
and held her hands and began talking to her. She looked me right in the eyes,
and I felt as though she was talking to me, without saying any words. Tyler came
back in the room, and I continued to talk… I talked about the baby, telling her
that we were going to have her soon, and recounting the time when grandma took
us aside and told us that she had been thinking a lot and had thought of a
really good name for her. Elaine. When I said these words she got tears in the
corners of her eyes, and she stopped shaking and held our eye contact for many
minutes until drifting off to sleep. It was a very sweet time with her, and we
said our goodbyes.
A few days later, she was moved home to pass there. Lynley
was able to bring her a picture she had drawn and say goodbye to her GG. She wasn’t
awake then, and I was worried how Lynley would handle seeing her grandma like
that, but she did really good. I am very happy that she had that opportunity.
Grandma passed surrounded by all of her children,
peacefully. And although it is a sad goodbye, we know that it is the sweetest
of reunions with grandpa after many many years.
Her funeral was the 27th of September. It was an
amazing service, and a very sweet day. Tyler and his siblings sang a hymn at
the graveside.
